Nzouani Dhe Yatru
About ASAIU
Founded in Kampala on 26 December 2021, ASAIU exists because students from Anjouan needed more than a place to study — they needed each other.
The Island
An island in the Indian Ocean
Anjouan — Nzouani in Shinzouani — is an autonomous volcanic island in the Comoros archipelago, nestled in the southwestern Indian Ocean. Part of the Union of the Comoros, a nation of four islands that share one ocean, one language family, and one deep sense of identity.
Every year, students leave this island to pursue higher education in Uganda. They arrive in a new country, a new language, a new system — often alone, with little guidance on what comes next.
The Beginning
Born from a problem students felt
ASAIU was established on 26 December 2021 after a general meeting of all Anjouan students in Uganda. The problems they faced were real: navigating immigration, understanding the education system, and finding their footing in daily life far from home.
Eleven founding members came together that day and elected the first executive body — not to build an institution, but to make sure no Anjouan student would ever have to figure it out alone again.
Our motto
Education, Unity, and Innovation — the three pillars ASAIU was built on and continues to stand on.
The slogan Nzouani Dhe Yatru — "Anjouan is ours" in Shinzouani — is a reminder that wherever we study, wherever we go, the island we come from belongs to all of us equally.
Education
Promote good quality education, help members succeed academically, and value every form of learning — formal and informal.
Unity
One voice, one community — students across all campuses, levels, and schools, connected under one roof.
Innovation
New partnerships, new support systems, and new ideas from a generation with the courage to study far from home.
Our Mission
Uniting and Empowering Anjouan Students in Uganda
ASAIU provides guidance, protects the interests of its members, and builds a democratic atmosphere for every Anjouan student in Uganda. We offer a united voice on matters that affect our community — academic, social, economic, and cultural — and ensure no member faces their journey alone.
Our Vision
Global Citizens with Roots in Anjouan
We envision graduates who carry the values of ASAIU — good morals, unity, faith, leadership, accountability, and academic excellence — into every field they enter. A community that gives back to the next generation, and keeps the island alive through its people.

Mutually beneficial ties with universities, institutes, and schools across Uganda — opening more doors and more opportunities for every member.
Leadership & Citizenship
A democratic structure, elected offices, and real accountability — ASAIU builds leaders who carry those values into every field they enter.
